When we receive feedback on something we did, created or said we often heed the strongest sentiments for or against us.

Such responses might arise at work, in our personal lives, on social media or elsewhere.

As a journalist and editor, you have to develop thick skin. I struggled to ride the highs and lows of putting my work out there for a long time.

But my old boss and dear mate used to give me some advice in these moments:

Our biggest fans and worst critics are both wrong.

I cannot remember who said the original quote or if this is the exact phrasing, but it is sage advice.

An enemy will overamplify their criticism of us and a loyal fan will do the same with their praise.

Somewhere in the middle lies the truth.
