#22 Seven reasons walking is your creative secret weapon
Walking is a fantastic way to exercise but it can also boost creativity.
Besides the physical benefits of a walk, moving puts us in a state of flow where surface levels concerns fall away, freeing up headspace to find deeper insights and creative solutions.
Here are seven reasons why we should take a walk when we feel stuck or uninspired:
- Boost creativity. Creative thinking improves 60% while walking versus sitting according to this Stanford University study.
- Increase blood flow to the brain. Walking helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to brain cells, which can improve cognitive function and creativity.
- Rub shoulders with great company. Some of the most influential thinkers and creators were dedicated walkers: Steve Jobs, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Stephen King and Friedrich Nietzsche all incorporated strolls into their routines.
- Reduce stress. An anxious mind is a preoccupied mind. Stress can have a negative impact on creativity, so reducing it can help you to think more clearly and come up with new ideas.
- Stimulate the senses. Walking exposes you to new sights, sounds and smells. Sensory input can help to stimulate your brain and generate new ideas.
- Eliminate distractions. When we walk, we naturally feel better physically and our thoughts clarify. Combine this with an absence of electronic devices and we can truly relax into a calmer, more creative mindset.
- Affordable inspiration: Walking is incredibly accessible – all you need is a decent pair of shoes that are supportive and comfortable and off you go. No subscriptions, expensive gear or memberships required.
